Higher Learning Commission reaffirms SEARK accreditation
(June 17, 2026 - Pine Bluff Commercial) The Higher Learning Commission has reaffirmed the accreditation of Southeast Arkansas College, ending a two-year probation for what the commission described as a violation of three academic requirements.
The HLC issued a public disclosure notice of the status change dated June 25.
“HLC took this action based on the institution’s ability to demonstrate that it is in compliance with HLC requirements,” the commission wrote. “It was placed on Probation in June 2024, when it was determined to be out of compliance with HLC requirements.”
SEARK announced the reaffirmation in a news release Tuesday (June 30). The college says the accreditation marks “a major milestone in the institution’s continued commitment to excellence, accountability and student success.”
SEARK officials had been preparing faculty and staff for a comprehensive visit to the campus by HLC representatives in November 2025. College leaders visited commission members in Chicago this past April to make a final case.
The college says the commission recognized its progress in institutional planning, governance, assessment, academic quality, fiscal responsibility and student success initiatives. The commission review demonstrates SEARK meets “rigorous standards for quality and effectiveness,” the college adds.
SEARK President Tyrone Jackson, Ed.D., called Tuesday “a proud day” for the college and the communities it serves.
“The removal of probation is the result of the unwavering commitment and hard work of our faculty, staff, administrators and Board of Trustees,” Jackson said.
“Together, we embraced the challenge of strengthening our institution, and today we celebrate a significant achievement that positions SEARK for an even brighter future. Most importantly, this outcome reinforces our promise to provide our students with an exceptional educational experience.”
On June 27, 2024, the commission placed SEARK on probation for being out of compliance with three criteria: “Persistence, retention and completion outcomes;” “Effective governance and administrative structures;” and “Systematic and integrated planning and improvement.”
The HLC also concluded SEARK needed to address concerns related to two other criteria: “Ensuring quality of educational offerings;” and “Assessment of student learning.”
SEARK said it implemented numerous improvements to strengthen institutional effectiveness, enhance student support services, improve assessment practices and ensure long-term stability.
“The decision reflects years of focused work by SEARK faculty, staff, administration and the Board of Trustees to strengthen institutional processes, enhance academic quality and build a culture of continuous improvement,” the college states.
Donna Hunnicutt, Ed.D., SEARK’s vice president of instruction and student success, led efforts to remove the college’s probation status as accreditation liaison officer.
“Removing probation is a reflection of what can be accomplished when an entire college community works together toward a common goal,” Hunnicutt said. “Every department, every employee and every member of our leadership team played a role in this success. Accreditation is about demonstrating our commitment to students through continuous improvement, strong academic programs and sound institutional practices. While we are proud of this achievement, we view it as the beginning of our next chapter of excellence.”
Jackson said the college will continue to innovate, expand opportunities for students, strengthen partnerships throughout Southeast Arkansas and fulfill its mission of “transforming lives through education.”
